Mr President

Mr. President, I have some questions for you
And I really think I deserve some answers
If not because I am a citizen of our Great Nation
Then because I have walked in harms way for her
And because I have bleed for her in foreign lands
You should know that though
After all it was your father as President that sent me there
And later recognized my courage and bravery in her service
So I think I deserve some answer or at least to be heard
Mr. President can you please explain to me
Why it is that you can send young men to war
To fight for freedom and liberty for others
When there is a war going on in our own streets
And freedom and liberty are quickly becoming myths
How can we say we are free, or that we have liberty
When we can’t walked down our streets without fear
Or let our children play outside without worry
You send young men to fight on foreign soil
But you ignore the battles being waged in our streets
Against poverty, against oppression, against discrimination
Against a system that is failing to provide those under it a fair chance
Our jails are filling with warriors, and families are being shattered
And many are just giving up and seeking escape
Through needles, pipes, and bottles
We have a war here to fight to save our own streets
And we are losing because it seems nobody cares
Don’t think that I don’t understand what our young men are fighting for
And know that I support and love our troops
I love them in a way that only a brother in arms can
I love them in a way that only those that have been where they are can
As I told you already I have bleed for my our nation
And step into harms way for her, and would do it again
But I have to ask you when are we going to look to our own
And start fighting to save our Nations heart
I have to ask because I remember the names and faces
Of those that didn’t make it home with me
I have to ask because I still remember holding a young man as he was dying
Speaking to me of his family and his home
And crying for them as his life blood out on foreign soil
We owe it to them, to those that have paid freedoms coast and fallen
To protect what they have left behind, and not let their lose be in vain
So when are we going to start to fight for what is important
When are we going to start to fight for our own
Mr. President can you also explain to me
Why we send billions to other nations to help them build for their people
But no one will invest in our neighborhoods that are falling into ruins
Why is it that we will help those in foreign lands
But won’t help the man that is struggling on our streets
I know that we have to be good neighbors to our world community
And as the greatest Nation of the world show charity
But charity starts at home
And even a tenth of what we give away could do so much here at home
Our schools are under funded
Our communities are struggling with violence and drugs
Families are struggling to make it from day to day
But our tax dollars go overseas
Wouldn’t it be wise to deal with our problems at home
Before we try to save the world
I am not saying we shouldn’t be good neighbors
But wouldn’t we be better ones if we were taking care of our own
Wouldn’t we be able to show true charity
If we saw it in our neighborhoods and our homes
So when do we stop trying to pretend
Taking false pride in what we give to others
And start taking care of our own
Mr. President I am hurting
I have bleed for our Country and love her
But I have watched those I love fall in the street
And be swept up by the forces of the war that is raging there
One of my babies is being lost in this fight right now as I question you
So I would really like some answers and not lip service
If you cant give them to me just because I am a citizen
Then let me lay these two purple hearts and this bronze star before you
They represent the price I have paid to ask these question
The memories of those I fought with and whom died
And the families that they left behind demand that they be asked
And that they be answered
